Professor Robin Boyle, along with her co-author, Brooke J. Bowman, has published an essay, “The Beauty of Shorts: Ten Tips on Writing a Publishable Short Piece.” It appears in volume 4(1) of Proceedings: An Online Journal of Legal Writing Conference Presentations. The essay summarizes their presentation at the biennial conference of the Association of Legal Writing Directors, held in July 2023 at the University of California – Irvine School of Law.
Professors Bowman and Boyle share their combined experience of serving on editorial boards of peer-reviewed law journals for over twenty years. They are currently the Managing Editor and Editor in Chief, respectively, for Perspectives: Teaching Legal Research and Writing (published on the Thomson Reuters platform). Previously they served together on the editorial board of another journal in their field, Legal Writing: The Journal of the Legal Writing Institute. Individually they have led scholars workshops and taught scholarly writing.
In the essay, Professors Boyle and Bowman break down the important components of a short article, one typically in length of six to fifteen pages. They encourage others to contribute short articles on pedagogy and related skills topics.
