Professor Rosemary Salomone’s book, The Rise of English: Global Politics and the Power of Language (Oxford University Press, 2021), has been published in a paperback edition.
The updated Preface captures selected highlights from the past two years, “revisiting stories left unfinished and some since begun on ‘the rise of English’ with nationalism, globalization, and decolonization driving the narrative.” From Ukraine, to India, China, Algeria, Morocco, South Africa, the Netherlands, Italy, and France, the new edition reveals yet more “geopolitical twists and turns” either promoting or pushing back on English, and once again “affirms the value of English combined with multicultural understandings in supporting diplomacy, democracy, and opportunity.”
