St. John’s Law School rang in the new year with multiple faculty members and deans participating on panels at the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Annual Meeting, held January 3rd-6th in Washington, D.C. Here are some highlights:
- Professor Renee Nicole Allen was a speaker on the “Democracy in Crisis: A Pedagogical Response in the Legal Academy” panel, sponsored by the Minority Groups section. Professor Allen also represented St. John’s at the AALS meeting of the House of Representatives.
- Professor Catherine Baylin Duryea organized and moderated the New Voices in International Human Rights and International Law panel, which featured four emerging scholars in the field. Professor Duryea was also elected to serve as Secretary of the section on International Human Rights.
- Professor Mark Movsesian participated in a panel discussion, “Free Speech vs. Non-Discrimination: A Discussion on 303 Creative,” at the Federalist Society’s Annual Faculty Conference, held in conjunction with the AALS Annual Meeting. The other panelists were Dale Carpenter (Southern Methodist) and Amy Sepinwall (Wharton).
- Professors Rosa Castello and Christine Lazaro participated on the panel “Academic Integrity and Technology: What To Do About AI,” sponsored by the Section on Associate Deans for Academic Affairs and Research and the Section on Education Law. Deans Castello and Lazaro spoke about how St. John’s is preparing faculty and students to integrate generative AI and assess the risks and benefits.
- Associate Dean for Student Services Eric Shannon participated in the AALS Balance and Well-Being Section’s Works-in-Progress workshop. He presented on his draft article, which argues that industry best-practices at law schools across the country should include provision of mental health counseling to law students by an on-staff counseling administrator.
