Professor Rosemary Salomone’s award-winning book, The Rise of English: Global Politics and the Power of Language (Oxford University Press, 2021; paperback 2024), was extensively quoted in setting the stage for an article, “How Much Sway Does Our Language Have Over Our Thinking?,” by Manvir Singh, in the December 30, 2024-January 6, 2025 issue of The New Yorker magazine.

Framing the discussion around the “Goddess of English” and the promise of equality for India’s Dalits, which Professor Salomone explores in her book, the article takes a balanced tour through competing views on the interaction between the way we speak and the way we think.
