Professor Elaine Chiu has marked a return to law review scholarship. Her article, “The Model Minority Victim,” is being published in an upcoming issue of the Santa Clara Law Review. The article features an empirical study of how the criminal legal system responded to anti-Asian attacks in NYC in 2021. It looks closely at the responses of police and local prosecutors and also features several case studies where victims were frustrated in their efforts to secure meaningful and just outcomes.
Professor Chiu is also a co-executive producer of a new half-hour documentary called “Voices Against Anti-Asian Hate.” Produced in conjunction with the Asian American Bar Association of New York (“AABANY”), the documentary is now available for immediate screening by members of the public, such as community groups, schools, or companies. This impactful film highlights the voices of individual victims and community advocates from numerous anti-Asian attacks throughout NYC that were inspired by COVID. If you are interested in learning more about their stories and want to arrange a screening, please contact Professor Chiu directly at [email protected] or Daphne Mei, Program Manager at AABANY, at [email protected].
Finally, Professor Chiu was recently selected by AABANY to receive its Women’s Leadership Award at their upcoming 2025 Annual Dinner on May 29, 2025 at Cipriani Wall Street. Alongside St. John’s Law alumni and current students, Professor Chiu has worked hard on behalf of Asian New Yorkers and has led and supported numerous pre-law pipeline programs.
