Professor Rosemary Salomone was extensively quoted in an article, “Algeria Drops French, Adopts English as University Language,” in the April 17th issue of World University News. Commenting on the geopolitics of language in Francophone Africa, she notes that Algeria’s move toward English is not simply about the rising dominance of English and its value in the global economy. It’s equally driven by political factors, including the enduring memory of Algeria’s struggle for independence from France, contested French policies on immigration and selective deportations, and exclusionary French attitudes toward national identity. The current diplomatic dispute over Western Sahara has brought all these tensions to the surface and made the shift to English all the more concrete.
